A caption on the verso reads: "WINS RACE TO SOUTH POLE -- Sir Edmund Hillary, 38 year old New Zealander who was reported today to have reached the South Pole in a Overland race, looks over the Antarctic scene from the New Zealand base on Ross Island a year ago. Hillary, conqueror of Mt Everest, led his party of three other New Zealanders oveer much of the 1,200 mile route of Britain's Capt. Robert Scott in his 1911-12 polar trip. The Hillary party, third explorer group to reach the polar goal by overland route in 45 years, outdistanced the British party of Dr. Vivian Fuchs which is pushing towards the pole from the opposite side of the Antarctica." |
