A framed embroidery created by Johanna Burnett, July 1877, depicting the Alphabet, numbers, symbols and pattern in various bright colours.
Original Description:The sampler details the alphabet, in both upper and lower cases, and numbers, up to 14 (15 is partially done); these lines of lettering are divided by various Greek sourced meanders. At the base of the work is the embroiderers name and date (Johanna Burnett, July 1877), as well as a crown, chalice, cross and bowl housing conceptual contents.
The canvas ground of this work is greatly apparent, with the weave being highly delineated, it is of a natural colouring. Colour of the thread within the work appears as a study through the hues, with each letter evidencing a movement through the colour wheel. For example in those letters that are green, shift from yellow to yellow green to green and finally to blue green.
