Object Name Inkstand
Description Inkstand with wooden (oak?) base and merino (?) horn with silver inkwell and bell.

Base has shallow, wide groove for pens, etc., and stepped edges. Horn is set behind the groove and twists up. Tip is capped in silver with a scalloped edge, from which hangs a bell on an axle, so that it swings. Bell is engraved with 'PRESENTED TO / J H Hawkes / BY THE / N.Z.R / Employees Timaru / 1891". Inset into the base of the horn is a glass inkwell with silver lid and rim. The cavity for the inkwell is also lined with silver and has '26' on the base. It has a scalloped edge where it is screwed to the horn. The base of the horn is capped with silver which has a scalloped edge and an etched leaf design. It has 'RdNo32842' stamped into the silver. To the side there are two upright rests for the silver-plated bell ringer. Ringer is in the shape of a rod with a round ball at each end - one ball is bigger than the other - which is used to ring the bell since the bell does not have a clanger.
