An undated plan for a proposed Timaru motorway, showing the suggested first stage terminal for and future extension via Hayes Street, circa 1960. The proposal shows a new roadway passing the foot of No.2 Wharf on an overbridge. From there it connects to a round-about between No.2 and No.1 Wharves, connecting to another overbridge crossing the railway lines and connecting to Cains Terrace, Strathallan and Station Streets. Future extensions including a connection to Hayes Street is also shown, with another railway overbridge. The roadway and round-about would have extended into the harbour between No.1 and No.2 Wharves, no doubt requiring land reclamation. Timaru Harbour Board plan no.1090 |
