Address to the honourable James Craigie from the citizens of South Canterbury [Illuminated manuscript] |
Scope & Content |
An illustrated address to the honourable James Craigie, from the citizens of South Canterbury on the eve of his departure for an extended visit to Egypt, the Holy Land and the Mother Country (Britain), produced in 1924. The casebound book, with marbled fabric endpapers and a leather dustwrapper, was given to James Craigie in recognition of his philanthropy and service to the citizens of Timaru and South Canterbury. The book itself is comprised of three main sections. Following a portrait of Craigie, twenty two pages of text outline Craigie's activities and achievements. The text is lavishly decorated with drop caps and decorative borders. At the end of the text three pages bear the signatures or names of the principal subscribers - including many other notable locals, philanthropists, members of parliament, mayors, and others. Finally nine mounted photographs of projects Craigie was involved in conclude the content - including the tree-lined avenue that came to bear his name, the Sacred Heart Basilica, and Public Library. A page at the rear of the volume dates the gift and credits the illumination to Richard Cruickshank of Timaru, the photographs to E H Ombler of Timaru and the binding to Wal Taylor of Sydney. |
