  5. Lieutenant David Grant

    Lieutenant David Grant, circa 1910. Grant served with the Duntroon Rifles as a Lieutenant prior to moving to Timaru in 1907, but reverted to the ranks when he joined the Timaru City Rifles. It was not long before he worked his way up through the ranks in Timaru though, and by May 1909, he was acting Lieutenant. Eventually, after the introduction of the Territorial system, he was appointed Captain of the 2nd (South Canterbury) Regiment in 1913....

    A letter from Major David Grant, on board RMS Athenic, to his wife Ann Grant of Timaru, dated 16 November 1914. Grant was on his way to Egypt with the Main Body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and was killed on 25 April 1915 at Gallipoli.

    Souvenir postcards from Major David Grant, serving in Egypt with the Main Body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, to his family, from late 1914 or early 1915. Primarily intended for Grant's daughter Greta, aged four. The cards sometimes bear a short messages on the verso. Grant was killed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915.
