Collection |
Ashurst/Langton Collection |
Description |
One of a series of prints taken during the rescue of injured mountaineer Ruth Adams from La Perouse on the west Coast in 1948. This image shows three climbers on a steep snow covered slope, who appear to be in the process of lowering someone down the slope (out of site). Labelled on the verso with: "300 ft of rope out on western[?] side[or ridge?]" and "34". The rescue has been noted as the most arduous in New Zealand's climbing history . Adams, injured near the summit, had to be carried on a stretcher over the summit and through deep gorges through the Cook River valley to reach the West Coast road. She was a member in a climbing party including guides Harry Ayres and Mick Sullivan who was guiding Adams and Edmund Hillary. |
