Description |
One of a series of prints taken during the rescue of injured mountaineer Ruth Adams on a stretcher from La Perouse on the west Coast in 1948. This image shows the rescue party with Adams, on a stretcher, about to be loaded onto the rear of a flatbed truck after the party reached the road near Fox Glacier. Labelled on the verso with "Reaching the road[.] Hillary on extreme right" and the number "14". The rescue has been noted as the most arduous in New Zealand's climbing history . Adams, injured near the summit, had to be carried on a stretcher over the summit and through deep gorges through the Cook River valley to reach the West Coast road. She was a member in a climbing party including guides Harry Ayres and Mick Sullivan who was guiding Adams and Edmund Hillary. |
