[Rifles parade on Caroline Bay, Timaru] |
Description |
"Rifles Parade" on Caroline Bay, Timaru, circa 1901-1905. Depicts two groups of uniformed soldiers in parade formation on the sands of Caroline Bay just north of the harbour. The front ranks wear the uniform of the Timaru City Rifle or Timaru Rifle Volunteers, while the two ranks beyond them wear the khaki uniform that came into regular service with the Boer War. The uniformed men have previously been tentatively identified as Mounted Rifles, but may possibly also have been men returning from the Boer War. This is possibly the Parade of the South Canterbury Battalion held in February 1904. Note the harbour in the background, featuring the eastern extension work in progress, begun in 1901 and completed in 1905. Glass plate negative and copy print. |
