Title |
A 'Grand tableaux', circa 1900 |
Description |
A mixed group of volunteer rifles, Port Guards and civilians posed on a float, circa 1901. Depicts the group, some kneeling with rifles levelled, on the flag-draped float facing the camera. One of the men (kneeling second from left) has been identified as John Tonycliffe. A handwritten note on the verso reads "After the Boer War", and advertisement in the Timaru Herald in February 1900 offers a clue as to the purpose of the ensemble. The advertisement, for a show at the Theatre Royal, states the directors decided to present a 'grand tableaux' representing the battle for Transvaal with the assistance of the Timaru City Rifles, Timaru Rifles and Port Guards. A Christchurch Weekly Press photographer was to visit to record the event and appear in that paper's following week's issue. Such events were often undertaken as part of patriotic fundraising for the South african (Boer) War. |
